Dear Mom & Dad,

Just a short note tonite because this is the last letter I’ll be able to send from here. This has got to be in the mail by 0600 in the morning or it won’t go out. Guess we’ll be leaving pretty soon according to that.

Got two more letters from you today, those of the 3rd & 6th. They’ve really been coming through lately.

Dec. 16: As you see I didn’t get this letter finished. As I remember now, think food was mentioned & I forgot the letter. Oh yes, I did my packing to, after I got through having a sandwich or two.December 13, 1945 Page 1 Continue reading

Dear Mom & Dad,

Now that I’ve settled down here, will see if I can’t get another letter written to you tonite. This will likely be one of the last ones from this place.

Have really gotten quite a few letters from you lately. Those from Nov. 10th to Dec. 1, have all come in at once. Got the one you wrote at Anna’s, Mom, last nite.

As you should know, long before you get this far, there’s $150 in money orders enclosed in the letter. Just add them to the blue of the ledger.December 12, 1945 Page 1 Continue reading

Dec. 9, 1945: Did He or Didn’t He find Him

Dear Mom & Dad,

This’ll be mighty short. There’s just one thing I’ve got to say & I want to say it before I get any more letters from you.December 9, 1945 Page 1

I’m thoroughly regusted & I do mean regusted. Now look Dad, I enjoy every word of the deer hunt that you write & I can even stand you holding out on who shot the other 4 deer till further installments, but when you’ve got nerve enough to write 6 pages on how you took 5 shots at one standing, missing every time, I’ll add, & then hitting him with the sixth. o.k. so far. Then you can’t find him. That’s o.k. to. I can find out more about the rest if I just read a little farther. Yeah! so we sit down to a little game of rum & after winning a buck & a half or so, decide we’re tired so we’ll forget for now about that buck that we shot at this afternoon.

I hope you’re happy. It’s been two days now that I’ve wondered did he or didn’t he find him the next morning. Shouldn’t be surprised if that letter telling me gets here about 15 days late.

Thats all for tonite & again I repeat. I’se regusted.

Lots of love,

Dick

Dear Mom & Dad,

Meant to write last nite, but thought I’d pick up my money order & send it, so held off till tonite. Couldn’t get the money order because it wasn’t ready, but another $150 will be on its way home in 2 or 3 days.

Got “beaucoup” mail today. They must have cleaned up all of the attic & etc. of letters here in the E.T.O., for everybody got a bunch of it today. Some a couple months old. Got 4 from you folks. Those of the 10th, 21st, 25th, & 28th.

O.K., I’ll admit you’re pretty hot Dad. Maybe your eye sight isn’t quite as bad as thought. Notice you didn’t say just how far he was away at the time of the shooting. I don’t know why, except your writing seems to have a confident sneer about it, but I have a sneaking hunch you got at least one of those 4 deer.December 7, 1945 Page 1 Continue reading

Dec. 2, 1945: Middle East and N. Africa

Dec. 2, 1945

Dear Mom & Dad,

I wish I didn’t have to write this letter tonite but it has to be done, so here goes.

I can tell you pretty definitely I won’t be home for Christmas & likely not for some time after it. We’re moving near Munich, Germany the 15th of this month. That is no rumor, its everything but done. I guess form Munich our Sqdn. is supposed to go to some place in N. Africa & photograph Libya, Egypt & the coast line of the Middle East. It’s supposed to take us till sometime in April to do all of this.

This Middle East  & N. Africa deal isn’t definite yet, but just don’t be surprised if you get a letter from me down that a way one of these days. There are rumors that two Sqdns. will stay over here & two will go home. The low point men (meaning me) will stay here & do the job. So unless some brass hat changes his mind on a few things in the immediate future, don’ t except me to come steaming into the Michigan Central depot for a while yet.December 2, 1945 Page 1 Continue reading
